I'm not getting any younger, and neither is Steve Jobs! So why did Apple make the 'Running Application' indicators in the new Dock.app so small in Mac OS X 10.5? I can barely see those little glowing balls.
This simple tutorial, loaded with pictures, will walk you through the steps to install replacement indicators. You can download a black set of indicators from Silver Mac, or grab my download which contains red and blue indicators, including replacement images for when the dock is on the side.

We will start by jumping to the folder that contains the 5 PNG files that are used to create the indicators.
With a Finder window open, select from the Go menu, Go to folder... (shift-command-G)
Type the following into the dropdown box and hit return:
/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources
Now you're inside the Dock.app program's Resources folder. Before we replace the original PNG images, let's make a backup. Select the following 5 images:
indicator_large.png
indicator_medium_simple.png
indicator_medium.png
indicator_small_simple.png
indicator_small.png
Control-click on them to bring up the contextual menu and Compress 5 Items. On your desktop will appear Archive.zip.
While the five items are still selected, drag them to the Trash (trust me, it'll be OK, plus we have a backup on the desktop!). You'll be asked for your Admin password.
Open another Finder window of the folder containing your 5 replacement PNG images and drag them into the Resources folder. Again, you'll need to provide an Admin password.
Once the files copy, you should see the new indicators in the Resources folder. Rename the Archive.zip of the original images and put it someplace safe in case you ever want to switch back. Log out, and back in to see the new indicators.
