NEWS: Yahoo Widget Engine Updated!

NEWS I'm jumping up and down with joy. Really, I am! The Yahoo Widget Engine (Konfabulator) has been updated for Leopard! Finally, I can have all my widgets back!

On the downside, it's only 35 degrees here in Chicago and I'm freezing my gluteus maximus off.

NEWS: LiteIcon Beta for Leopard

NEWS Ugh! I'm so bummed. LiteIcon has been updated for Leopard, and the reviews at Macupdate say it works... but it's not working for me (and it's all about me!). You're luck will probably be better. If you think you have a solution fo me, let me know!

Update: As Cletus™ is always telling me, I am a dork. I was inadvertantly launching an old version of LiteIcon. After finding the new one, everything works great!

NEWS: Dragthing Updates with Tweaks, Kills Bugs

NEWS The King of all Dock Apps, Dragthing, has received an update to provide some tweaks for Leopard and kill a few bugs. One of my favorite new features is the "No Glass" theme that matches Apple's last minute change to their Dock when it's stuck on the side (see my snapshot below).

Another tweak provides a preference for Spaces that allows you to tag specific docks for specific Spaces.

In my snapshot, Apple's Dock is pinned to the right, and 4 Dragthing docks are at the lower left.

NEWS The lab results are in: Picture Switcher 2.0 is a desktop picture application on steroids! In addition to the all the options you get with Apple's Desktop System Preference, you can apply Core Image effects to every desktop.

NEWS: Pixelmator is Black.

NEWS I admit back in June, I was cynical that Pixelmator would be released. Anyone want to help me get my foot out of my mouth?

I downloaded the new graphics app and gave it a spin around the block. For $59, it's great. The menus look very familiar (cough-photoshop-cough), so you can move around quickly! Download the demo of Pixelmator and try it for yourself!

My one small complaint is the omnipresent transparency of the toolbars. Maybe it's my old rock-n-roll eyes, but if there is anything on your desktop, the bleed-though makes it tough to see the tools. Click the preview below to see what I mean.

NEWS: New Shapeshifter!

NEWS Hey, listen up! Unsanity has released an update to Shapeshifter that not only fixes a lot of bugs, but themes Safari 3. Did you hear me: THEMES SAFARI 3! Below is a list of what's new. Grab it and then visit the Theme Archive and beautifinacious your Mac.

  • ShapeShifter no longer causes instabilities when used with Apple's Pro applications.
  • ShapeShifter now works properly with beta versions of Safari 3.
  • Cocoa pull-down menus now use the correct text color when pressed.
  • Cocoa box titles now use the correct text color.
  • guiTweak now presents a more informative error dialog when an insurmountable error prevents tweaking from concluding properly.
  • ShapeShifter now honor's Camino's "CAMINO_DISABLE_HACKS" environment variable.
  • The preference pane no longer erroneously states that new version "(null)" is available when an internet connection is present, but is unreliable.
  • ShapeShifter now properly handles OS versions with a bugfix number greater than 9 (e.g., OS X 10.4.10).
  • Windows bmp "magic pink" transparency conversion now works properly on x86 machines.
  • Adding a new guiKit to the ShapeShifter prefpane no longer causes the names of guiKits that are available to all users on the computer to disappear from the ShapeShifter prefpane.
  • Resolved an obscure issue that could cause applications to crash occasionally when ShapeShifter is loaded.

P.S. I think the fact that Safari 3 can now be themed bodes well for the themeing of Leopard. Maybe someone running  10.5 can install Shapeshifer 2.5 and let us know in the Comments what happened.

NEWS: Need a New Chum?

NEWS My buddy Bill Cochran sent a link to Chumby, your new digital buddy. Using your wifi network and desktop computer, you program Chumby with a playlist of widgets that display traffic, weather, and the all important celebrity gossip!

At around $200 it's an expensive alarm clock, but if you need a never ending stream of info while drinking your morning coffee, then snap up a Chumby. (It reminds me of those advertising LCD screens in elevators which I'm convinced suck your brains out.)

NEWS: Panoramio and Google Earth

NEWS Last night I was bouncing around on Google Earth and I noticed a bunch of extra blue dots on the map. Linked to each dot was a photo someone had taken of that area. In downtown Chicago, there were hundreds of dots by dozens of photographers!

At the end of May, Google acquired a company called Panoramio, a photo archive specifically created to link with Google Earth. Previous to the acquisition, users could only view their linked images on the site, of by adding a KML file to Google Earth, but now the 2 million photos are part of Google's standard information stream.

Last night as a test, I uploaded about a dozen pictures to the site. Within the next month, these photos will be merged into Google Earth, until then you can view them on Panoramio of download the KML file.

Viewing any photo also shows pictures taken by others in the same area. It's really a brilliant idea and I'm going to make sure my next digital camera has build in GPS!

NEWS: Jump Through a few Hoops for Free Bryce 5.5

NEWS You can get a fully functional copy of Bryce 5.5 for free if you're willing to jump through a few hoops. First, go to Download.com and grab the Mac version (a link to the Windows version is also there).

Before you can run the installer, you need a serial number from daz3d. This requires you to create an account, so get the sacrificial email address out. When you run the installer, it will prompt you to install some component from daz3d. I decined and the process continued.

So now I have a fully functional copy of Bryce which I have no idea how to use, but hey, it was free! If you are an artist who does know how to use Bryce, the daz3d site has a link for a $20 upgrade to version 6.1.

Ya know, the Rendered area of the Download Section is the only one without any contributions. Why don't you grab Bryce and show me what you can do!

NEWS: Pixelmator on the Horizon.

NEWS M2 reader nerg dropped a line to mention Pixelmator, a soon to be released graphics editiing application from the two bothers who founded Jumsoft. The Pixelmator user interface is derived from Apple's Heads Up Display as seen in iPhoto among other things. The screenshots look beautiful and TUAW has a video pf the app in action, but I must admit my concern. Pixelmator relies heavily on third party technologies (ImageMagick, Cairo, Sparkle, and Automator), several of which are Open Source. What will happen over time to an application built like this as these various elements receive updates? We won't have to wait long to find out. Pixelmator is scheduled for release this month at a price of $39. (TUAW) Pixelmator Specs.
